2022 Syrah

This wine showcases everything we love about a cool-climate Syrah. Jespersen Ranch is located in the northwestern corner of the Edna Valley AVA, just four miles from the Pacific Ocean. Less than .1% of California vineyards are planted this close to the coast and very few include Syrah. This wine has a delicious combination of vibrant black cherry and blueberry flavors alongside savory black pepper and broad, brushy tannins.

When grown in a cool, coastal climate Syrah is a slow-ripening grape and is typically our last pick each harvest. However the extreme summer weather in 2022 meant we were able to harvest three weeks earlier than average.  

We hand-harvested the grapes and gently pressed them whole-cluster. We fermented the grapes in small, open-top tanks, adding some whole-clusters directly to the juice to add tanning complexity and spice. We aged the wine in French and American oak barrels for 18 months before bottling.
